Here are the top stories in Bedford today:
- The price of gas is higher today than it has been in recent months. Why are prices higher? Experts say that supply-chain issues are partly to blame. Dan Goodman, of AAA Northern New England, said just like many industries, fuel is facing supply-chain issues, and prices are unlikely to come down soon. According to those familiar with how the supply-chain works, during the pandemic many industries lost workers, consumers stayed home and traveled less, and changed their spending habits, which all had a ripple effect on the global economy. Demand for products like cars, technology, and travel is returning, but supply chains are not able to catch up. Experts say that we can expect higher prices in the winter as demand for heating oil and fuel increases. The average price for gas in Bedford yesterday was $3.29 a gallon, but there's some good news. New Hampshire drivers are paying less than some others in the region, Goodman said. (WMUR)
- Free hair cuts to honor veterans: Veteran's Day is on Thursday, Nov. 11 and for the sixth year in a row, Gary W. Pelletier, CLU, ChFC, AIF, a wealth planner with offices in Bedford and Nashua, will be sponsoring free haircuts for veterans and active duty members of the U.S. military. The free haircuts will be provided at Spencer Martin Barber Shop, 178 Route 101, Nov. 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Nov. 12 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m, and will be first-come, first-serve. - If you live in New Hampshire, you will have to include the "603" area code to make a local call after Oct. 24, 2021. What prompted the change? The new National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number that will take effect next July is 988, but residents and businesses in Portsmouth already have telephone numbers that begin with 988. Amanda Noonan, Consumer Services and External Affairs director of the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission Division said, if she called a friend who lives in Portsmouth from her landline telephone and dialed 988-1234, the call may be directed to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, taking up resources needed for those in crisis. To make sure calls for the future National Suicide Prevention Lifeline are not misdirected, New Hampshire customers will have to dial all 10 digits for their calls to go through after Oct. 24.
