Here are the top stories in Bedford today:

  1. What a win! College ice hockey fans were on the edge of their seat during the final minutes of the UNH game against Union on Saturday night at the Whittemore Center. Senior forward Joseph Cipollone from Purchase, N.Y., scored the game-winning goal with only 56.5 seconds left. UNH goaltender Mike Robinson, from Bedford, N.H., made 16 saves during the game. The Wildcats are 2-0 to open the season. UNH will play at Arizona State on Friday. (Concord Monitor)
  2. Several New Hampshire runners participated in two back-to-back marathons: the Chicago Marathon on Sunday and the Boston Marathon on Monday. Beth and Joe Connolly of Manchester, who have run more than 60 marathons, planned to run both. They said the challenge of running in Chicago on Sunday, and flying home that day to run in the Boston Marathon the next morning, was daunting but exciting. Why were both marathons on back-to-back? The Connollys said they signed up for the Chicago Marathon when the new date for the Boston Marathon hadn't been announced due to the pandemic. Boston was later rescheduled for Monday, the day after the Chicago race. Dave Saarinen of Bedford, who also planned to run both races, said he would start the race in Chicago at 7:30 and hoped to finish by 11, with a flight back at 3:05, "with plenty of eating and hydrating in between." Saarinen said he was looking forward to the final stretch down Boylston Street. (WMUR)
  3. The first New Hampshire plant is about to become extinct. The plant, a smooth slender crabgrass, was last collected in 1931 at its only known home, on Rock Rimmon in Manchester. Despite at least 25 formal attempts to find the native plant, no one has found a specimen in the state in 90 years. New Hampshire state botanist William Nichols, who works with the state Natural Heritage Bureau, said this will be the first plant to become extinct in New Hampshire. Nichols said that humans are often responsible for extinction and can be blamed for the loss of smooth slender crabgrass. Rock Rimmon, a granite outcropping in a park on the West Side with city views, has frequent human traffic. It's often used as a party spot, and campfires on the site may have contributed to the plant's extinction, Nichols added. “It’s sad because if we were better stewards, it’s likely a plant or animal extinction could be avoided," he said.
