Here are the top stories today in Bedford:
- "Wildfire season has started in New Hampshire," and the wildfire risk is high in Bedford. The Bedford Fire Department already responded to two brush fires, and reminds residents to properly dispose of and water down cigarettes and any kind of ember. Bedford Fire Capt. Michael Jolin noted, "This time of year is tough because it's so dry, and winds can cause a fire to spread quickly. " A fire ban is in effect, and an outdoor burning permit is required. (WMUR Manchester)
- The death of a Massachusetts man fatally shot by law enforcement near the New Hampshire Space Force Station "was justified," the Attorney General said on Friday. The decision followed an 11-month investigation of the May 2022 shooting of 33-year-old Michael Foley at New Hampshire’s federally funded Space Force Station in New Boston. Foley drove his car up to the gate on May 13, 2022, at around 11:33 p.m. with his lights off and was carrying weapons. Bedford police were among the responding officers. (MassLive.com)
- A shoutout to Bedford High School athlete Araceli Cloutier, who is on the 2023 USA Today High School Sports Awards Girls Soccer watch list. The list includes 50 student athletes "who meet the nomination criteria for this year’s national Girls Soccer Player of the Year Award." The athletes on this year's list "were either nominees in last year’s national awards show, or athletes who were seriously considered based on season-wide performance, state championships and any other state, regional and/or national recognition." Congratulations! (USA Today)
