Bay State Games Wrestling Tournament, For 2025, Appears To Go Off Without A Hitch
The regional event, featuring hundreds of wrestlers from across the United States, made significant changes to the tourney this year.
FITCHBURG, MA — Hundreds of wrestlers from around the United States battled in hundreds of matches at the Bay State Games wrestling tournament on Saturday.
But unlike last year, everyone knows who the winners were at the end of the event.
In July 2024, referees, who volunteer for the tourney every year, walked out before all the matches were settled, causing confusion and anger among coaches, wrestlers, parents, and others who stayed late in the day, too, to see the tourney come to its conclusion. In fairness to the refs, there were many problems with the event last year — too many wrestlers, a slightly late start, and glitches that knocked out computer equipment.

The organizers apologized and made some big changes in the off-season. And the event appeared to go off without a hitch.
Kevin Cummings, the executive director of the Bay State Games, said some of those changes included limiting the number of wrestlers to no more than 400, eliminating same-day registration, and closing off registration early, and remote weigh-ins.

Those changes appeared to make all the difference.
An off the mat call was issued tad late, at 8:14 a.m., but the bouts got underway quickly. Having only 400 wrestlers seemed to also keep the event at a quick pace. Some wrestlers experienced very short breaks between bouts.
