CONCORD, NH — The new coronavirus pandemic has disrupted the economy, both big and small, local, regional, and national. But it has also created a climate where community members are doing what they know best to help others.

Erik Uhlig of Granite State Audio, an audio, video, and security installer for vehicles, boats, and homes, has done just that — using his shop to create face shields for businesses and first responders that need them. Uhlig has been working in the 12-volt consumer electronics industry for more than 18 years while also working in his own shop on the side. He currently subcontracts for a number of Telematics companies, traveling around the Northeast and to Canada. He has a small storefront at the Concord Auto Spa (but travels most of the time).

Why are you constructing these face shields for people?

The 12 volt industry was affected hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of not doing anything, me and others in the industry decided to give back. Materials were made available to purchase, design, and produce face shields. I put my own twist on them — by building them stronger and making them more comfortable. I can modify these face shields for head sizes, headgear, headlights, etc. I just wanted to help in some way.

How many have you made so far?

Over 300 face shields have been produced, so far, all handmade.

Was it difficult to pivot from audio to making shields?

It was not really too difficult to go from one service to another — especially producing face shields that could save someone's life. I think that the hardest part was finding materials.

What is the most difficult thing right now for you and your family with the pandemic?

My family and I have been getting through this together but it has been difficult not being able to see and hug family and friends. Changing everything we normally did to not being able to do much of anything has been hard — but I'm trying to stay positive.

Is there anything else you would like to say?

I will continue to produce and donate face shields as long as people need them. I have setup a fundraiser on Facebook for the cost of materials.
