New Hampshire corrections officials said John Mesquita escaped a minimum-security unit and fled in a vehicle with a stolen gun.

CONCORD, NH — A convict who escaped a Concord prison facility Wednesday has been caught, authorities announced Friday. John Mesquita, 41, walked away from the minimum-security Community Corrections Transitional Work Center then obtained a vehicle and stolen gun, according to the state Department of Corrections. He was arrested by police in Virginia early Friday.

Mesquita was held in custody pending extradition back to New Hampshire. He faces a charge of escaping a transitional unit — a felony that's punishable by up to seven years in prison.

Mesquita was convicted of robbing a Manchester convenience store and assaulting a clerk in 2011. He had been scheduled to be eligible for parole in June 2020.
