NH Governor Bans Autonomous Car Testing, Citing Death

Driverless car testing in New Hampshire was banned by Governor Chris Sununu. In March, a self-driving car hit and killed a woman in Arizona.

CONCORD, NH — New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu this week vetoed legislation seeking to allow autonomous car testing in the state. Sununu cited an incident in March in Tempe, Arizona, when a self-driving Uber car struck and killed a woman.

"This issue is just too serious," Sununu wrote in his veto message. "This legislation may attract less responsible actors to New Hampshire to develop autonomous vehicle technology and could result in a more dangerous testing environment on New Hampshire's roads."

Self-driving car testing is allowed in parts of Massachusetts including Boston — though city officials temporarily halted the program in the aftermath of the Arizona incident.
