NH Infant Saved After Monoxide Leak On Lake Winnipesaukee Boat

Two children aboard a boat on Lake Winnipesaukee suffered carbon monoxide poisoning, officials said.

ALTON, NH — An infant was revived Saturday after suffering carbon monoxide aboard a boat on Lake Winnipesaukee in Alton, according to authorities. The 8-month-old infant was aboard a 35-foot pleasure boat with adults when the incident happened, according to New Hampshire Marine Patrol. A 2-year-old child on the boat was also sickened by carbon monoxide.

New Hampshire State Police Lieutenant Crystal McLain said officers were dispatched to the lake at about noon.

"The adults on the boat were attempting to resuscitate the child," McLain said in a statement.

The child regained consciousness by the time the boat reached the Alton town docks. The 2-year-old child was sickened while in one of the boat's compartments, McLain said.

The children were transported to Lakes Region General Hospital, treated and released.

"On boats, (carbon monoxide) can be caused by generators, gasoline engines, vessels traveling at slow speeds or improper angles causing CO build up in cabin areas, and wind bringing CO from the back of the boat to enclosed spaces," McLain said. "It is recommended that vessels with enclosed areas have a carbon monoxide detector, check it regularly, and replace it according to manufacturer recommendations."
