NH Police: Man Impersonated Officer, Possibly Made Traffic Stops

New Hampshire police said James Behen impersonated a DEA agent, outfitted his truck with emergency lights and possibly made traffic stops.

NEWMARKET, NH — New Hampshire police this week said a Newmarket man was arrested on charges he impersonated a federal drug agent — going so far as to wear a gun, badge and bulletproof vest and outfit his truck with emergency lights. James Behen (pictured), 35, was charged with a host of crimes. Police said they believe he has been pulling over vehicles on the road.

Kensington police said an officer encountered Behen July 19 to ask about a traffic ticket the officer gave to Behen's wife.

"Behen identified himself as a Drug Enforcement Administration ... Agent working out of the Manchester ... field office," Kensington police said in a statement. "The officer was suspicious of Behen’s story, and it was subsequently confirmed that Behen is not currently, nor has he ever been, employed with the Drug Enforcement Administration."

Behen was arrested July 25 in Exeter. Police said they found him with a handgun, federal law enforcement badge and bulletproof vest with police markings. His truck, a 2006 GMC pickup, was outfitted with blue and red emergency lights.

Police added, "Through our investigation, we have reason to believe that Behen may have been making motor vehicle stops or contacting members of the public representing himself as a DEA (agent)."

Kensington police said anyone who may have encountered Behen while he was posing as an officer should contact them at 603-772-2929.

Behan was held on $10,000 bail pending an arraignment in Rockingham County Superior Court.
