NH Senator: Fake Latvian Official Wanted Russia Meeting

New Hampshire U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen said a man impersonating a Latvian official asked to discuss Russian sanctions and Ukraine.

WASHINGTON, DC — New Hampshire U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen this week said a man impersonating a Latvian official recently contacted her office and tried to set up a meeting to discuss Russian sanctions and Ukraine. The Democrat said she turned over information to the FBI.

Shaheen said she did not know who was behind the ruse, which came a week after fellow U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill said Russian hackers to break into into her Senate computer network.

“Russia continues to engage in cyber warfare against our democracy," McCaskill said in a statement. "I will continue to speak out and press to hold them accountable. While this attack was not successful, it is outrageous that they think they can get away with this. I will not be intimidated. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, Putin is a thug and a bully."

The incidents happened as the trial for former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort started this week. Manafort is accused of failing to report $60 million in earnings from his lobbying efforts for Ukraine. Manafort is the highest-ranked Trump official to be charged in connection with Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
