NH Trooper Remains Hospitalized After Being Shot Multiple Times

CONCORD, NH — New Hampshire State Trooper Matthew Merrill was shot multiple times while conducting a traffic stop on Dec. 23. He remains in Dartmouth Medical Center in stable condition.

"Remarkably, Trooper Merrill survived the critical incident," Trooper First Class Stefan J. Czyzowski of the NH Troopers Association said. "The event, however, left him with serious injuries and a long road to recovery."

Merrill has been a law enforcement officer for 11 years. He joined the New Hampshire State Police in 2012. Prior to that, he worked as a Grantham police officer from 2008 to 2012. He is a member of the NH State Police SWAT Unit and serves as a mentor to fellow troopers.

Merrill is a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom, serving in Afghanistan, and he remains a member of the Vermont National Guard.

"The NH Troopers Association has been overwhelmed with the outpouring of support for our Trooper and teammate and we are blessed for such kindness from the community," Czyzowski said. "We would like to sincerely thank the literally thousands of people who have reached out or donated to Trooper Merrill. It is unbelievably heartwarming and we couldn’t be more appreciative."

Checks can be made out to The NH Troopers Foundation with a memo “The Trooper Merrill Recovery Fund.”

Czyzowski said the donations will be given directly to the Merrill family to assist in his recovery.
