Lent: There's an App for That

Observance for the digital faithful ahead of Easter in NH.

The words jumped off the page across from the Ash Wednesday Prayer in the program at St. Michael's Parish in Exeter: Best apps for observing Lent.

It is, as the program noted, a good reason not to give up your iPhone and iPad for Lent. The suggested apps were:

  • Magnificat Lenten Companion
  • 40 Days - Lent Observance Tracker
  • Days Without
Lent is the Christian 40-day season of prayer, penitence and alms-giving in preparation before Easter. Those observing Lent often commit to fasting, such as not eating meat on Fridays, or giving up something as a form of penitence.

The Diocese of Manchester, the Roman Catholic Church in New Hampshire, also offers an array of Lenten resources on its website.

According to a Gallup survey in 2013, 24 percent of Americans identified themselves as Catholic, and the percentage was 29 percent in New Hampshire. That survey found 38 percent of Granite Staters identified as Protestant. New Hampshire perennially finds itself at the bottom of the church-going list, next to Vermont. But, who knows, perhaps New Hampshire is tops in holy mobile downloads?
