A police officer who was shot during a gunfight with the Boston Marathon bombing suspects continues to recover from serious injuries.

Richard "Dic" Donohue, 33, was hit in the leg early Friday morning in Watertown, Mass., authorities said.

Donohue is police officer with the Massachusetts Bay Tranportation Authority. His wife, Kim, is from Exeter and graduated from Exeter High School in 2000.

Authorities said Donohue lost a massive amount of blood. At one point, he went into cardiac arrest, according to Dr. Russell Nauta, a doctor at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Mass. where Donohue is being treated.

During a news conference Sunday, Nauta said a bullet remains in Donohue's leg. Donohue is on a breathing tube, he added.

Doctors said Donohue remains in the intensive care unit in serious but stable condition.

MBTA Transit Police Chief Paul MacMillan said Donohue was out of his vehicle at the time he was shot by one of the suspects.

The police chief said Donohue had assisted other police agencies in the past, including at a stabbing scene in December in a nearby community.

"He grabbed the passenger by the sweatshirt and stopped the bleeding, ultimately saving the life of the victim," MacMillan said.

Edward Donohue, a Winchester Police officer and younger brother of Richard, also spoke at the press conference.

"He's a great cop and he loves being a cop," Edward said. "We certainly could not be more proud (of him)."

Donohue graduated from Viriginia Military Institute in 2002 and served in the Navy, according to Edward.
