A raffle- and fun-filed night, an art event and a special beach conversation lead the Five Things You Need to Know Today.

Good morning, Hampton and North Hampton. Here are five things you need to know for Wednesday, May 8:

 

1. Today's Top Thing: There are numerous raffles on tap at the 401 Tavern, which will donate 10 percent of sales tonight to Alicia Preston to help her raise money to walk 60 miles in the annual Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure breast cancer walk in July.

3. What Else Is Happening Today? There's a reception tonight for Hampton Arts Network's "Art in Bloom" exhibition, and the Hampton Beach Village District Precinct will meet tonight at the Hampton Beach fire station, during which Roger Stephenson of Stephenson Strategic Communications will discuss and ask for input on the future of the New Hampshire Coastal Flood prevention.

Also, the Hampton Parks and Recreation Department's is today, there's a Hampton Heritage Commission meeting at 7 p.m. at Hampton Town Hall, a North Hampton Energy Committee meeting at 7 p.m. at North Hampton Public Library.

4. This Day in History: On this day in 1945, both Great Britain and the United States celebrated Victory in Europe Day. Cities in both nations, as well as formerly occupied cities in Western Europe, put out flags and banners, rejoicing in the defeat of the Nazi war machine.

V-E Day commemorates the eighth of May, which spelled the day when German troops throughout Europe laid down their arms.

Also, Sean Connery starred in the first James Bond movie, "Dr. No," 50 years ago on this day in 1963.
