Beach Meters Will Start Charging Today

Good morning, Hampton and North Hampton. Here are five things you need to know for Wednesday, May 1:

1. Today's Top Thing: The meters at North Hampton State Beach will begin charging today for parking in all non-resident spaces, which may be in a different location than you remember them last summer.

The rate per hour will be $2, which is the rate the meter kiosks at Hampton Beach and other state beaches will also start charging today. Parking meters have been active at Hampton Beach since April 1, although at a $1 per hour rate.

2. Today’s Featured Fun: The annual Winnacunnet High School Spring Art Show is from 6 to 8 p.m. in the auditorium lobby.

3. What Else Is Happening Today? A presentation on the proposed intermodal transportation center in Hampton is planned tonight during a meeting of the Hampton Beach Area Commission, according to the April 25 meeting agenda. 

Also, the firm chosen to design the new North Hampton Public Library may be officially notified today.

4. This Day in History: Months before its release on this day in 1941, Orson Welles’ landmark film "Citizen Kane" began generating such controversy that Radio City Music Hall eventually refused to show it.

Instead, "Citizen Kane," now revered as one of the greatest movies in history, made its debut at the smaller RKO Palace Theater on May 1, 1941.
