'Lucky' Couple Unharmed After Car Flips, Strikes Pole in 'Freak' Accident

Police said a two-vehicle accident ended Monday night with one vehicle "flipping forward" after striking a granite post.

UPDATE (11:28 a.m.): Seabrook police say no one was injured and no one was cited Monday night after a two-vehicle accident caused one car to roll over on Lafayette Road, which was closed for multiple hours following the accident.

Deputy Police Chief Mike Gallagher said a black 2000 Nissan Versa struck a granite post, "flipped forward" and came to a rest on the guidewires of a utility pole near the Hampton Falls line at about 9:30 p.m. Monday after allegedly trying to swerve out of the way of another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.

The male drivers of both vehicles, both of which had a female passenger, claimed the other vehicle swerved into their lane, according to Gallagher. Gallagher said officers were "unable to determine who was at fault for the accident."

The black Nissan was traveling north on Lafayette Road while the other vehicle, a southbound gray 1988 Toyota Camry, was stopped and attempting to turn left to travel through the northbound lane to enter a mobile home park near the town line, according to the accident report.

The vehicles didn't strike each other, and the Toyota didn't hit any vehicles or objects, according to Gallagher.

There was no entrapment during the accident, which Gallagher said could've been much worse had the Nissan not been stopped by the guidewires and had the individuals within the vehicle not been wearing their seatbelts.

"They were pretty lucky," he said. "It was a freak thing."

Gallagher said Lafayette Road was closed until about midnight as police and firefighters worked to reconstruct the accident and clear the scene. Traffic was rerouted down side streets.
