'Finally Goody Cole Has a Proper' Resting Place

Above are a few images of the new grave memorial for Eunice "Goody" Cole, a Hampton woman who holds the dubious distinction of being the only Granite Stater to ever have been tried and convicted of witchcraft. 

The memorial is the end result of a lot of work by Robert McClung, a Dover musician who pays tribute to Cole's life and injustice in a progressive rock album titled "The Legend of Goody Cole."

McClung sought to bring peace and long-deserved resolution to Cole, who isn't buried in Hampton, by placing the memorial in front of an unmarked stone dedicated to Cole on Park Avenue. The new headstone was dedicated during the closing ceremonies of Hampton's recent 375th anniversary celebration, and McClung said on Facebook that the history-focused event was a fitting time for the service:

"The ceremony for [Sunday]'s Goody Cole memorial dedication was wonderful. Lots of people turned out to place flowers and show their respects. The head of the Hampton Historical Society gave a speech, I gave a speech, and NH Senator Nancy Stiles gave the final commencement.

"The new stone is beautiful. Finally Goody Cole has a proper place where people can come and honor her memory.

"I feel so proud to have been part of something that will carry on long after I am gone"
