Hampton Falls Moves On to Global Competition

When creative problem solving teams were forming in over 150 schools and community groups last fall, some of these students had no idea that they would advance past 300 teams to represent New Hampshire at the world’s largest creative problem solving competition, Destination Imagination Global Finals. On Saturday, teams that have advanced through regional competitions met at New Hampshire Destination Imagination State Finals — including teams from Winnacunnet High School and Hampton Falls' Lincoln Akerman School — in hopes of competing with the best teams from 15 countries and 48 states . 

Thirty-eight of these teams must now shift gears from creative problem solving to creative fund raising as their new destination is Destination Imagination Global Finals in Knoxville, TN. The competition will be held at the University of Tennessee from May 22 to 25.

“Teams, even if they don’t advance to the State Finals, go through a process," said Wayne Kurtzman, a N.H. Destination Imagination board member. “They learn how to apply the creative process to open-ended Challenges based in science, technology, the arts, engineering, math or service learning.” Since only the teams of up to seven students can help solve the challenge, team members develop research skills as well as communication, collaboration, situational and project management skills, along with a healthy dose of confidence.
