Lawsuit: Unitil at Fault for 2010 A Block Fire

An insurer for a Hampton Beach business is suing the utility company for damages from the 2010 five-alarm fire.

The insurance company for Hampton Beach clothing store Decalomania has sued Unitil, claiming Unitil was at fault for the devastating A Block fire in 2010 and therefore should reimburse the insurer for $32,749 paid out to Decalomania after the fire, according to the Union Leader.

The Union Leader has reported the Rockingham Superior Court suit filed on behalf of Lloyd's of London claims there was an electrical fault in a line owned by Unitil, and that this fault caused a Surf Hotel electrical conduit to overheat and spark the five-alarm fire, which was fueled by near-hurricane-force winds and wiped out numerous businesses. Fire officials have said the cause of the 2010 fire was never determined, and Unitil is reviewing the lawsuit, according to the Union Leader.
