Memorial Day: Honoring the Fallen

Local Memorial Day parades and observances are Monday. The traditional observance, on Friday, includes a ceremony at NH State Veterans Cemetery.

Memorial Day, a day to honor the fallen, is marked with numerous parades and ceremonies Monday around New Hampshire.

On Friday, the traditional observance of Memorial Day, there is an 11 a.m. ceremony at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.

"Each year on Memorial Day, Granite Staters and Americans come together to pay tribute to the heroes who courageously made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our great nation," Hassan said in a statement. "We owe a never-ending debt of gratitude to those who have sacrificed their lives so that their fellow citizens may live in peace. I join all Granite Staters in honoring our fallen heroes, their families and all of our veterans for their dedicated service to every American, to our shared values and to the enduring concept of freedom that is our very core.

The governor will speak at Plaistow's Memorial Day ceremony honoring Vietnam Veterans, with ceremonies following at the Plaistow Cemetery and Town Hall green at 10 a.m. Monday.

Hassan will sign legislation – at 2 p.m. Monday – naming a bridge at 64 West Broadway in Derry after Lance Cpl. Michael E. Geary, who was killed in combat operations in Afghanistan in 2010.

Parades & Ceremonies around NH include a ceremony at the NH Veterans Home in Tilton at 11 a.m.. Other parades locally include:

Amherst – Amherst's Memorial Day Parade is recognized on Friday, May 30, with an evening sunset parade start.

Concord – Memorial Day Parade is at 9 a.m. Monday, forming in the parking lot on Storrs Street, to North Cemetery for a brief ceremony, then to Statehouse plaza for closing ceremony.

Exeter – Memorial Day Parade starts at 10 a.m. Monday on the Swasey Parkway. The route goes to the Bandstand, to Front Street, to Gale Park and to the cemetery on Linden Street. Parade participants gather at Swasey Parkway at 9:30 a.m.

Hampton – American Legion Post 35 Memorial Day events:  8 a.m. Monday at the Hampton Beach War Memorial, 9 a.m. at the Weare Common in Hampton Falls; 10 a.m. North Hampton Parade-service Town Library; 11 a.m., Hampton Parade Service at High Street Cemetery.

Hudson – Memorial Day Parade starts at 2 p.m. Monday, from the Hannaford Shopping Plaza on Derry Street, to the Town Common. There is a brief ceremony at the Town Common, then the parade continues down Library Street and ends at Central Street, at the American Legion Post 48.

Londonderry – Memorial Day Parade musters at American Legion Post 27 at 9 a.m. Monday; a cookout at the Post follows the parade.

Manchester – Memorial Day parade begins at 2 p.m. Monday on Elm Street. The parade will cause portions of Elm Street in the area of Webster Street to close at 1 p.m. 

Merrimack – Memorial Day Parade begins at 11 a.m. Monday at Rite Aid on Daniel Webster Highway. It ends at Last Rest Cemetery, where ceremonies will be held.

Milford – Memorial Day Parade begins at 10 a.m. Monday at West Street Cemetery. The route goes to Em Street, with a stop on the bridge, and then the Milford Oval and to the VFW on One VFW Way.

Nashua – Memorial Day Parade starts at 10:30 a.m. Monday, from Holman Stadium. It proceeds to Nashua City Hall.

Portsmouth – Memorial Day Parade, 1 p.m., starting at Junkins Ave./Parrott Avenue.

Salem – Memorial Day Parade begins at 10 a.m. Monday from the Pine Grove Cemetery on Main Street. There is a brief ceremony at the Veterans Memorial in Pine Grove Cemetery, then the parade proceeds down Main Street to Veterans Memorial Park to Salem Town Common, where the ceremony takes place.
