North Hampton's Dougherty to Be Laid to Rest Today

Henry "Hank" Dougherty, 64, passed away earlier this week, which also happens to be the anniversary of another big local loss.

Good morning, Hampton and North Hampton. Here are five things you need to know for Friday, April 12:

The North Hampton Town Clerk's Office will be closed from 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in order to allow employees to attend the services for Dogherty, who was the husband of the office's assistant.

2. Tragic Anniversary: Today is the one-year anniversary of the shooting death of Greenland Police Chief and North Hampton native Michael Maloney during an incident that injured four other officers and took two other lives.

Honor Maloney and the victims today during a special remembrance at 5 p.m.

3. What Else Is Happening Today? The Friends of Winnacunnet Foundation's 10-day fundraiser at the Poker Room kicks off today, while 35 percent of all revenue raised Friday and Saturday at Ocean Gaming will be donated to Experience Hampton to help fund the Hampton Christmas Parade and other events.

Also, there's an eighth grade mixer at Winnacunnet High School from 7 to 9:30 p.m., while Lane Memorial Library is hosting a free showing of the children's movie "Once Upon a Princess" at 10 a.m.

4. This Day in History: On this day in 1861, the bloodiest four years in American history began when Confederate shore batteries under General P.G.T. Beauregard opened fire on Union-held Fort Sumter in South Carolina's Charleston Bay.

During the next 34 hours, 50 Confederate guns and mortars launched more than 4,000 rounds at the poorly supplied fort. On April 13, U.S. Major Robert Anderson surrendered the fort. Two days later, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation calling for 75,000 volunteer soldiers to quell the Southern "insurrection."
