$10K Raised for Maloney Fund at St. Patrick's Day Fundraiser

Officers and friends have hit a huge mark in efforts to help the family of slain Police Chief Michael Maloney.

1. Today's Top Thing: Last month's highly-attended Chief Michael Maloney St. Patrick's Day benefit raised over $10,000, according to North Hampton Police Sgt. Josh Stokel.

Stokel said he and fellow officers "are very excited" to have raised that much, as the funds will help cover the costs to send Maloney's family and members of the Greenland Police Department to

A press conference will be held at Local’s Restaurant and Pub at 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, to present a check for the funds raised.

3. What Else Is Happening Today? Lane Memorial Library is hosting a free showing of the award-winning film "Lincoln" at 1 p.m. Friday.

Also, the group charged with overseeing the work to design a new North Hampton Public Library will select its favorite proposals today.

4. This Day in History: On this day in 1897, John J. McDermott of New York won the first Boston Marathon with a time of 2:55:10.

The Boston Marathon was the brainchild of Boston Athletic Association member and inaugural U.S. Olympic team manager John Graham, who was inspired by the marathon at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. With the assistance of Boston businessman Herbert H. Holton, various routes were considered, before a measured distance of 24.5 miles from the Irvington Oval in Boston to Metcalf's Mill in Ashland was eventually selected.
