Here are the top three stories today in Manchester:
- A new pilot program will offer skin tests for cancer to every Manchester firefighter, while those over the age of 40 with at least 10 years of service will be eligible for lung CAT scans. The initiative is driven by the recognition that the toxic environment firefighters face due to the presence of carcinogens in burning synthetic materials and furniture contributes to elevated cancer rates among them. The program involves collaboration with Dartmouth Health, which will provide comprehensive care if cancer is detected. (WMUR 9)
- Two individuals were hospitalized with injuries following a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 93 in nearby Londonderry (about 20 minutes from Manchester). The crash involved a construction truck owned by Weaver Brothers Construction and a minivan. The driver of the truck and the minivan operator were transported to Parkland Medical Center in neighboring Derry for treatment. (Patch)
- On Saturday, a rally was held downtown to raise awareness surrounding the ongoing fentanyl epidemic, which was been the cause of over 85 percent of drug-related deaths in New Hampshire in 2022. Andrea Cahill, who lost her 19-year-old son Tyler, said, "It's taking a pain and turning it into a purpose." The rally was put on in preparation for Fentanyl Awareness Day this week. (WMUR 9)
