Here are the top stories today in Manchester:

  1. Vacancies for apartments in New Hampshire are at a record low of 0.3 percent. This means that affordable apartments are harder to find in Manchester. The surge in demand has New Hampshire questioning if developer incentives will be enough to meet the needs of Granite Staters. A 0.3 percent vacancy rate means that 99.7 percent of apartments are already rented! (Subscription/The Union Leader)
  2. The hot and humid weather has New Hampshire residents "running to their air conditioners" for relief from the heat. With electric rates increasing, selecting a competitive electric supplier may cut rates and help save on your electric bill, officials said. But be sure to read the fine print of supply-side contracts, and know when they end (or roll over to a higher rate). The supply side electricity rate for Eversource in New Hampshire doubled to more than 22 cents per kilowatt hour as of Aug. 1. It's the highest rate in the region, according to Don Kreis, a New Hampshire consumer advocate. You can find out more about how to select a different electric supplier here: (WMUR)
  3. Manchester has an up-and-coming art scene, and people are starting to notice. The Queen City is home to the classic New Hampshire Institute of Art, and the Currier Museum of Art (that includes the legendary Zimmerman House). It also has a growing list of college art galleries, including the Alva de Mars Megan Chapel Art Center at Saint Anselm College. Performing arts are also thriving here, with the Palace Theatre (that includes the Spotlight Room and the newly-revived Rex Theater) and the Majestic Theatre. Don't forget the Manchester Art Trolley Tour in 2017 that highlighted the City's many arts and cultural hot spots. (Manchester Ink Link)
