📰 News we're reading

1. Officers who killed Manchester man had limited experience on the force (nhpr.org) — State investigators have finished initial interviews with three relatively new Manchester police officers who fatally shot 24-year-old Nickenley Turenne near Green Acres Elementary School on Dec. 6, and the officers remain on paid leave. Community advocates are pressing for transparency as the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office continues probing whether the use of force by Manchester police was legally justified.

2. Hallsville project approved for Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (inklink.news) — Redevelopment of Manchester’s former Hallsville School into 36 mostly affordable apartments just cleared a major hurdle with approval for 2026 Low-Income Housing Tax Credits. With most units reserved for residents earning around 60% of Manchester’s area median income, the project aims to turn the long-vacant 275 Jewett St. building into new housing that will stay affordable for decades.

3. Unpaid student meal debt in Manchester expected to reach $300,000 this year (wmur.com) — Manchester school officials say unpaid student meal debt is projected to hit about $300,000 this year, a sharp rise from pandemic-era levels. The district now provides regular meals even when accounts are negative, shifting the growing cost into the general fund and prompting calls from board members to address the problem.

4. The Nash Casino Presents $1.3M to local nonprofits including HOPE NH (inklink.news) — A Manchester-based youth nonprofit just received nearly $195,000 from The Nash Casino, helping fund food, sports gear, driver’s ed, instruments, and field trips for local students. HOPE NH works closely with the City of Manchester through a volunteer mentorship model, and leaders say this new support will expand services and inspire similar efforts in other communities.

5. There's Little Evidence Tech is Much Help Stopping School Shootings (counterpunch.org) — Manchester’s school board is cited as one of the districts exploring gunshot-detection technology, part of a fast-growing $4 billion school security industry. The piece questions whether tools like acoustic sensors, AI video scanning, and even response drones actually prevent school shootings, noting there’s little real-world evidence they improve safety compared with simpler, proven measures.
