5 Things: Obama, Romney Tie in Dixville Notch

Abraham Lincoln was elected today in 1860.

Here are five things you should know as you start your Tuesday.

1. School closed today. Merrimack's Public Schools are closed today while Merrimack hits the polls to vote in the general election. Voting will be at Merrimack High School from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

2. 12,000 Years Ago in NH. Join the Merrimack Public Library on Wednesday for an event steeped in Native American history from 7-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7. Join Dr. Robert Goodby, lead archaeologist on the Keene Middle School dig and Professor of Anthropology at Franklin Pierce University, for a presentation on his fascinating findings from an archaeological study prior to construction of the new Keene Middle School. The dig lead to the discovery of traces of four structures dating to the end of the last ice age, each with a diverse array of stone tools and evidence of caribou hunting and hide processing. Undisturbed for 12,000 years, the site revealed information about the economy, gender roles, and household organization of the Granite State’s very first inhabitants, as well as evidence of social networks that extended for hundreds of miles across northern New England. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Merrimack Public Library with a grant from the NH Humanities Council. Registration is suggested but not required.

3. Today in history. From History.com. "Abraham Lincoln is elected the 16th president of the United States over a deeply divided Democratic Party, becoming the first Republican to win the presidency. Lincoln received only 40 percent of the popular vote but handily defeated the three other candidates: Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge, Constitutional Union candidate John Bell, and Northern Democrat Stephen Douglas, a U.S. senator for Illinois."

4. Romney/Obama tie. Voters in Dixville Notch continued their tradition of being one of two communities to cast the first ballots in the country on Election Day. The votes split down the middle, five for Barack Obama, five for Mitt Romney
