MERRIMACK, NH — This Saturday members of the community will gather in spots throughout Merrimack to participate in the town's second annual Neighborhood Cleanup event. The event takes place just a couple days before Earth Day, and gives residents a chance to give back to the community while helping to beautify their town. There is still time to sign up for those who would like to participate.

"It's an opportunity to give back to the town," said Merrimack Parks and Recreation Director Matt Casparius. His department works with Department of Public Works to organize the event.
Casparius said he was impressed by the turnout at last year's inaugural Neighborhood Cleanup Day, which drew more than 300 volunteers. Many of the participants belong to local organizations, such as the Boy or Girl scouts, or the various athletic teams. The groups go to various locations in town, including Watson Park, the various Adopt-A-Spots and open spaces.
Many of the volunteers spend time collecting trash and debris left over from the winter — last year they collected hudreds of bags of trash, said Caparius. Other tasks include weeding, raking, and minor landscaping, he said.
For this year's Neighborhood Cleanup has attracted about 70 volunteers so far, Casparius said Tuesday afternoon. He said the town is still recruiting volunteers. He added that the number of available participants might be limited this year, because the event is taking place the day before Easter Sunday.
Those wishing to participate in this year's event are asked to meet at the Town Hall at 9:45 a.m. The cleanup will continue for about two hours. Those wishing to volunteer are asked to call the Parks and Recreation Department at 882-1046. They may also sign up at the start of the event. Volunteers can sign up as groups or as individuals.
