Step into Your Local Police Officer's Shoes

Popular program aims to help residents understand how the Merrimack Police Department operates on a day-to-day basis.

Merrimack Police Department announced this week that it is now accepting applications for its 19th annual Citizen's Police Academy. The Academy is scheduled to run from Jan. 22-March 23. Classes will be held on Wednesday nights from 6-9 p.m. with the exception of range day, which will be held on a Saturday. The Academy’s objective is to acquaint the residents of Merrimack with their Police Department. 

This course is limited in size, so apply early as it fills up fast.

This 10-week course enables the participants to understand the professional standards that the Merrimack Police Department demands from its officers. They will obtain knowledge of the day-to-day operations and duties of the various divisions within the Department. Topics to be covered include:

  • Overview of our Organization,
  • Patrol Functions,
  • Criminal Investigations,
  • Community Policing, Accident Investigation,
  • Court Proceedings / Criminal Justice System, Firearms, Arrest Procedures,
  • Defensive Tactics, Communications (911),
  • Animal Control, School Resource Officers functions.
Class participants may ride with a patrol officer for four hours to see firsthand what an officer may encounter during a shift. The Academy is open to any Merrimack resident 18 years or older.

Academy Applicants are subject to a background check prior to being admitted to the Academy. To apply, go to the Police Department's website  general forms page and fill out a Citizen Police Academy application or stop by the Police Department, 31 Baboosic Lake Road and pick up an application at the Dispatch service window.
