Wire Road Bridge Construction Nearing End

Here are five things you should know as you start your day.

1. Dog deadline. 2013 dog licenses are available at the Town Clerk’s office. All dogs 4 months and older are required by law to be licensed annually by April 30.  To license your dog, the town must have proof that your dog’s rabies shot is valid. In addition, if your dog is neutered or spayed, a copy of the certificate needs to be filed with the town. Read more about why you must license dogs in New Hampshire, and know the penalties. Unlicensed dogs could get you summonsed to court.

2. Wine and chocolate tour. The Parks and Recreation Department will host a bus trip on Wednesday, May 8, to tour New Hampshire’s oldest and largest wineries as well as Swan Chocolates in Merrimack.  The motorcoach will depart from Wasserman Park at 9 a.m. The price is $65, which includes transportation, tickets for tours, samples, lunch, and drivers gratuity. Visit the town website or call the Parks and Recreation Department at 882-1046 for more information.

3. Wire Road bridge construction ending. The Wire Road bridge construction over Baboosic Brook is nearing completion. On Thursday, Town Manager Eileen Cabanel said the guardrail still needs to be installed, the top coat of pavement laid and a few other details, but the planned opening to traffic is May 10 – maybe sooner if the weather cooperates

4. The Old Man of the Mountain at the Library. Join the library on Wednesday from 7-8:30 p.m. for the story of the Old Man of the Mountain. "Maggie Stier’s illustrated talk reveals the ways that this iconic place has sparked observers’ imaginations, attracted intense personal commitment, and symbolized changing public sentiment. Stier details the threats to the Old Man and Franconia Notch that led to protection as a State Park and, later, to the construction of the Franconia Notch Parkway. She concludes with an analysis of what caused the fall of the Old Man in 2003, a summary of private efforts to create a memorial, and a discussion of how this unique natural phenomenon may be remembered by future generations. The audience is invited to bring souvenirs, memorabilia or other artifacts of the Old Man of the Mountain for a shared display before and after the program, and to share their own experiences and memories on this topic. The library’s display case will feature an exhibit of Old Man memorabilia during the month of May. This program is suitable for adults and teens. Registration is strongly advised. The Friends of the Merrimack Public Library present this event with a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council.

5. Weather watch. Another day in the mid-70s is upon us. According to the National Weather Service, today will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 73. Tonight will be clear with a low around 37.
