The Real Dirt: Toward Food Sufficiency and Farm Sustainability in New England

The recently released book  The Real Dirt: Toward Food Sufficiency and Farm Sustainability in New England  by John E. Carroll, Professor of Environmental Conservation at the University of New Hampshire argues that a whole new smaller scale agriculture is evolving to replace New England’s commodity agriculture based on selling to wholesale markets. He contends that a new agriculture, smaller in scale, directly marketed, sometimes organic, increasingly grass-based, bio-diverse, governed by biological and ecological principles and sustainable in theory and practice is fast rising across all of New England.

The Orchard: A Memoir of the Great Depression by Adele Crockett Robertson.

After the death of her father in the spring of 1932, Radcliffe graduate Adele Crockett left her city job to save the family apple orchard in Ipswich, Mass. She had to cope with a mountain of debt, aging machinery and the vagaries of weather -- all without encouragement from her mother and brothers. Later, she wrote in rich detail about her farming years in the depths of the Depression. Her manuscript was discovered soon after her death by her daughter, Betsy Cramer, who contributes the introduction and epilogue.

Newcomers welcome. Copies available at the Circulation Desk.
