Elderly Mass. Hiker Injured, Rescued From Mount Monadnock In New Hampshire
Antoniou Panagiotis of Jamaica Plain, MA, was injured when he fell about 15 feet. NH Fish and Game officers worked overnight to rescue him.

JAFFREY, NH — A hiker from Massachusetts was rescued from Monadnock State Park Sunday by New Hampshire Fish and Game.
Conservation officers were called at 8:20 p.m. and notified of an injured hiker on the Spellman Trail at Monadnock State Park. Antoniou Panagiotis, 74, of the Boston neighborhood of Jamaica Plain, was descending the trail when he fell approximately 15 feet and suffered upper body injuries that prevented him from continuing without assistance, according to Fish and Game.
Panagiotis’ hiking companion could call for help from a cell phone. Two conservation officers reached the pair at 10:15 p.m. and provided first aid to the hiker before assisting him down the mountain.

According to conservation officers, the hikers began their hike at 11:30 a.m. and were unprepared for an unexpected mountain stay while waiting for rescuers. Rescuers provided water, warm clothing, and headlamps.
The hikers reached their vehicle at Monadnock State Park Headquarters on Poole Road at 1:40 a.m. on Monday. Panagiotis denied an ambulance and was transported back to Massachusetts by his hiking companion.
Officials said the incident was a good reminder to everyone recreating outdoors to dress appropriately, hike with a partner or group, and carry the necessary equipment. Always plan for the unexpected.
