Homelessness and Drug Epidemic in Downtown Manchester Affecting Small Businesses:ARCNH.org Steps In to Help

Manchester, NH – The downtown area of Manchester, once a bustling hub for local businesses, is now facing an unprecedented crisis. Rising rates of homelessness and substance use have created a challenging environment for small business owners, many of whom are now struggling to maintain their livelihoods amid growing concerns for safety and security. One such person is business owner, Tom Pusharich, owner of Restoration Cafe. Receiving bad review after bad review for the environment surrounding his once booming business, he is also facing employee loss as they no longer feel safe walking to and from their cars to get to work.
Business owners in the area report that drug-related incidents and the visible presence of the homeless population have intensified in recent years. “It’s heartbreaking,” says Tom, owner of a Restoration Cafe. “I love this community and want to stay here, but everyday I’m dealing with people in crisis right outside my door. My customers are starting to feel uncomfortable.”

Incidents of open drug use, vandalism, and loitering have become increasingly common, deterring both residents and visitors from spending time in the area. Local law enforcement and community groups are working hard to address these issues, but resources are stretched thin.
In response, the Addiction Recovery Coalition of New Hampshire (ARCNH.org), along with Revive Recovery and Hope for NH Recovery, have announced an initiative to assist Manchester’s downtown community in dealing with these pressing issues. ARCNH.org, a nonprofit organization based in Milford, NH, is dedicated to helping individuals and families affected by substance use disorders. The organization plans to collaborate with local businesses, city officials, and support services to tackle the growing epidemic, providing much-needed resources and working toward long-term solutions.

“Our primary focus is on recovery and prevention,” said Gray Somers, Executive Director for ARCNH.org. “We’re actively seeking ways to support Manchester’s small business community by offering resources to those in need and implementing programs aimed at reducing substance abuse and homelessness in the downtown area.”
The new initiative from ARCNH.org will include community outreach programs, additional support for mental health and addiction recovery, and coordination with existing city resources to increase access to treatment and housing services for those in need. The organization aims to bring a compassionate, solutions-focused approach to address both the immediate needs of individuals and the concerns of local businesses.
Through this initiative, ARCNH.org hopes to not only help those struggling with SUD but also to create a safer, more vibrant downtown area where local businesses can thrive. For small business owners, this effort offers a glimmer of hope. “We want the city to be a safe, welcoming place for everyone,” Puskarich said. “It’s reassuring to know that ARCNH.org is stepping in to help make that a reality.”
Manchester residents and local businesses are encouraged to get involved and support ARCNH.org’s efforts by volunteering, donating, or attending informational sessions on substance use disorder and homelessness.
