5 Things: Costly Kids, Aspartame, Bra App, @Prince and Facebook Sadness

Some news from around the horn, to elevate, enlighten and amuse.

1. Rising Cost of Raising Junior: Read it and weep:  According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the cost of raising a child has jumped 2.6 percent from 2012.

2. Aspartame OK? Coca-Cola wants you to feel OK about drinking diet Coke as an alternative to sugar and deterrent to obesity. Soda sales have been slumping in recent years, as people have shifted to waters, teas and other non-carbonated beverages.

3. Need a New Bra? There's an App for That: If you’ve ever had trouble finding the right bra size, ThirdLove app has you covered. It's a new clothing brand under parent company MeCommerce, that has designed an app to help you find and buy the perfect bra, simply by taking two pictures of yourself in the mirror with your iPhone. It's not as creepy as it sounds.

4. Let's All Welcome Prince to the Twitterverse: This is kind of a big deal, for those who love the artist currently known as Prince, and who also follow celebrity Twitter feeds. Prince, who at one time had an aversion to the new-fangled Internet, has embraced it, according to this story. He is now Tweeting, using the handle: @3rdeyegirl. As a dedicated fan, I would Tweet 4 U, Prince.

5. Facebook a Bummer? A study out of Michigan has concluded that cruising Facebook on a regular basis is a bummer. Mostly, the short-term study picked up on mood fluctuations. Personally, I get a kick out of Facebook – most of my FB friends keep me smiling. It reminds me of a recent status update on the "Portlandia" Facebook page, which seems to embrace the sadness: "What a Facebook page should be is a document of human misery."
