New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan and U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen will address workers, labor leaders and community members at the New Hampshire AFL-CIO 2013 Labor Breakfast.
Additional guest speakers for the annual Labor Day event will include State Commissioner of Labor James W. Craig and Department of Employment Security Commissioner George Copadis. The New Hampshire AFL-CIO Scholarship Committee will also announce the recipients of the 2013 scholarship awards. This year’s applicants were asked to submit essays on the value of collective bargaining for public sector workers.
“Working men and women and middle-class families took the brunt of the recent economic recession, and many of the good jobs with living wages we lost during the downturn have not returned to New Hampshire,” said NH AFL-CIO President Mark MacKenzie. “In Concord and in Washington, D.C., politicians are embroiled in contentious debate over immigration and health care policy reforms that will have a far-reaching impact on the well-being and economic security of Granite State working families. We use the tradition of Labor Day to honor the extraordinary contribution that ordinary working people make to New Hampshire’s economic growth and the quality of life in our communities. This year, we will continue that tradition by hearing from elected leaders and labor advocates about plans and innovations that will create more jobs with better wages and help us move forward together.”
Organizers expect 250 people to attend this year’s event. The 2013 Labor Day Breakfast will be held on Monday, September 2, 9 a.m. at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 650 Hanover Street, in Manchester. Tickets are $25 per person and may be reserved by calling New Hampshire AFL-CIO at (603) 623-7302.
