Firefighters Attack Large Brush Fire at Mine Falls Park

Rough terrain deep in the woods is posing a challenge for Nashua firefighters.

Nashua Fire crews remained on the scene of a large brush fire off Grand Avenue in Mine Falls Park Sunday morning.

According to Nashua Deputy Fire Chief Brian Rhodes, Engine Co. 2 arrived on scene Oct. 27 just before 6 a.m.  and discovered three to four acres of brush and leaves burning freely.  A first alarm equivalent ( 2 Engines and 1 Ladder) was required to contain the fire.

The city's two Forestry Units were also called in to assist, as well as a 3,000-gallon tanker from Dunstable, Mass., Fire Department.  As of 10 a.m. two Engine companies and two forestry units are still on scene and will be for many hours.  Due to dry conditions this fire very burned deep into the ground which makes for a very labor-intensive overhaul operation, Rhodes said.  Hudson Fire also supplied specialized equipment to supplement Nashua's equipment and to aid in spreading the foam, needed to help penetrate the dry forest floor.

Rhodes said challenges in this fire included darkness and trip-fall hazards, including uneven ground, and getting manpower to the fire, which is in the middle of city yet in a remote location.

Fire crews were called to a brush fire Oct. 21 in a similar location.
