Chamber of Mothers, National Org, Is Hosting Inaugural Meeting
Explore Mothering in America — what works, what doesn't, and what needs to change now.

The Chamber of Mothers, a collective movement to advance maternal rights in America through national and local advocacy, is launching a Granite State Chapter. The initial meeting is taking place on May 29, 2024 from 6 to 8 pm at Laney & Lu in Portsmouth. All NH mothers and allies who are interested in making the state a more supportive place for Moms, are invited to attend. Registration is available at https://bit.ly/3Kdv38g.
The Chamber of Mothers was founded in November of 2021 when Congress cut Paid Family Leave from President Biden’s proposed “Build Back Better” legislation. That night, the founding mothers of the group texted each other in outrage and built a plan to take action into their own hands. While running companies, folding laundry, feeding newborns, and making dinner, they decided to assemble and advocate as a collective force to give voice to millions.
“The three pillars we attach ourselves to are: Paid family medical leave for all, affordable and accessible childcare, and improved maternal health outcomes,” said NH Chamber of Mothers’ Co-Chair and Durham resident, Tara Ryan. “We have the power to make real change right here in the Granite State.”

“I’m proud to be co-leading a NH chapter that’s rooted in my why — ensuring that my daughter and all of our children don’t have to ask these questions: Why do 25% of American Moms have to go back to work two weeks after giving birth? Why do 51% of Americans live in a “childcare desert”? Why is maternal mortality a national emergency? I want them to feel that support and solutions outweigh barriers and hurdles. It’s also important to feel like caregiving work has value and is more evenly distributed, because we have laws, policy and support in place to ensure this. I want to unite today’s mothers as advocates, so the mothers and children of tomorrow feel supported and empowered,” said Ryan.
Candace Hubner St. John, is also co-chair of the New Hampshire Chapter. She brings a strong background in health education and epidemiology to the position. St. John holds a Master’s degree in Public Health and is a parenting educator. She currently resides in Keene, NH.

“I know we all have so much on our plates already, but I don’t want this to stop Moms from getting involved if they want to. There’s no mandatory commitment to join us. It’s okay if you show up to one meeting, then skip three,” Ryan said.
