LTC Partners Awards $114,000 in Scholarships to Federal Employees and Their Children in 6 New England States

Federal employees and their children in six New England states have received $114,000 since 2007 in New England Regional FEEA Scholarships from LTC Partners (LTCP), administrator of the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program.  Generally, two students from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont are awarded $1,000 each for a total of 12 scholarships each year.

LTCP, based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire has contributed to the Federal Employee Education & Assistance Fund (FEEA), a non-profit organization that supports government and military workers to fund the scholarships it administers for the federal family.  According to FEEA Executive Director Steve Bauer, LTCP donated $10,000 each year from 2007-2009 and another $12,000 per year from 2010-2014. An additional $24,000 was provided in sponsorship contributions.

“Since most of the recipients have an A-minus grade point average and all are good students, the real differentiator among them is the amount of community service performed,” said Bauer.  “These students contribute to their communities in amazing ways.  We’ve had young people who are mentors, church and nursery school volunteers and even those who have traveled to South America to clean up the Amazon. “

Bauer says he’s not surprised by the devotion shown because most of the winners are the children of public servants. “Federal employees don’t get rich,” said Bauer.  “They go into government service because they want to keep America strong.  They want to keep our water clean, our national parks beautiful, our borders strong.  They really believe in what they do and they pass that along to their children.”

Paul Forte, CEO of LTC Partners, said, “We’re delighted to be in a position to provide this scholarship assistance.  The sacrifices made by the military and civilian members of the federal family are great. It is important for both these individuals and for the workforce as a whole that those seeking higher education for themselves and their children have access to it, and to the opportunities that follow.”

The committee that judges scholarship applications is comprised of volunteers from the Boston office of the FEEA and also includes one representative from LTC Partners.  They rate each applicant on academic record, an essay related to the federal government that judges writing skill (Last year’s topic was: If you would consider working for the federal government, what job would you like and why?), personal recommendation, extracurricular activity and public service.
