Portsmouth Seeks Adopt-a-Spot Volunteers
Four locations are currently available for adoption.
Submitted by the City of Portsmouth:
The City of Portsmouth is looking for volunteers to participate in its Adopt-A-Spot program. Portsmouth’s Adopt-a Spot program began in 1995 with the goal of enhancing and beautifying green spaces throughout the City. Families, neighborhood associations, businesses, schools, gardening clubs and other groups are among the 40 individuals and organizations who generously donate their time to keep 48 city-owned garden areas planted and maintained.
“Participation in Portsmouth’s Adopt-a-Spot program is a wonderful way for individuals, groups and businesses to demonstrate commitment to our city, and is the kind of effort that truly builds our community,” says Peter Rice, Director of Portsmouth Department of Public Works.
Currently four Adopt-a-Spots are available for adoption. They are located at South Mill Pond at the playground and tennis court entrance, Middle Road at Middle Street, Woodbury Avenue on the hill across from Market Basket and the bus stop at the High-Hanover Parking Facility.
Adopt-a-Spot Volunteers agree to weed, pick up litter, mow, and trim their spot as needed. There is no requirement to plant flowers, but plantings are allowed. The Department of Public Works will provide volunteers with safety vests, goggles, mulch, loam, and trash bags upon request. It will also collect yard waste and trash as needed.
The City is pleased to recognize the service of the volunteers who are responsible for adopting a spot with a sign at each location. Interested parties may obtain additional information about the Adopt-a-Spot program by contacting Roberta Orsini at 603-766-1422 or by visiting http://cityofportsmouth.com/publicworks/adopt.htm.
