3-Alarm Derry Brush Fire With Heavy Fire Accelerated By Gusty Winds

DERRY, NH — Derry Fire Emergency Communications Division received multiple 911 calls reporting a Brush Fire Fordway Extension Wednesday just before 1 p.m.

Shortly after, additional 911 calls were received for an additional brush fire on Interstate 93 in Windham. Fire apparatus from Derry and Windham were dispatched, including Derry Engine 1, Foresty 3, Ladder 3, and Car 1 (Battalion Chief) to the Fordway Extension and a Windham engine and tanker to I-93.

Due to heavy fire, windy conditions, and the need for water supply, the Fordway Extension call escalated to 3 alarms.

Multiple mutual aid resources were requested from Atkinson, Auburn, Bedford, Candia, Hampstead, Hudson, Londonderry, Manchester, Pelham, Hudson, Raymond, Salem, Sandown, Plaistow, Hooksett, AMR, Derry Police, NH State Police, NH DOT, NH Fire Marshals Office, and the Southern NH Regional HAZMAT Team.

A drone team provided aerial thermal images to assist the crews in locating the hotspots.

Companies at the Fordway Extension fire scene stretched hose lines and used hand tools and chainsaws to fight the multi-acre fire between the Fordway Extension and a walking trail through the conservation land.

The fire on I-93 was brought under control by Windham and Derry Fire.

The fire remains under investigation by the Derry Fire Marshal.

At the time, no civilians or firefighters were known to have been injured by the fire.
