'Age is Only a Number' for 93-Year-Old Award Winner

Seven of the area's "most priceless women" were recently honored in Salem for adding "sparkle to the lives of many."

Submitted by the Greater Salem Chamber of Commerce

Gathered in a room that overlooks a pristine golf course, surrounded by trees displaying full autumn colors, close to 200 people gathered at the Merrimack Valley Golf Club to honor seven of the area’s most priceless women.  These women, who often operate “behind the scenes” to make sure good things get done, are truly “precious gems.”

The Hidden Jewels Luncheon is a program developed by the Greater Salem Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Platinum Sponsor Salem Co-operative Bank.  Women have a long history of balancing family, career, community and service.  These awards are intended to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of women who have excelled in their chosen field, defined their role through their initiative and dedication, and established a record of leadership and involvement.  When the idea came to fruition six years ago, the group did not want the “typical women in business” luncheon. This event honors those who quietly and steadily contribute, but whose luster is not always celebrated.

Mother of Pearl, Elsie Talanian

This year’s Mother of Pearl winner, Elsie Talanian, who is 93 years young, is a firm believer in the adage:

“Age is only a number.”  A 44-year employee at the Salem Observer, Elsie continues to write her column each week “A Chat With Elsie.”

The afternoon included a presentation by guest speaker, Tracy Caruso, award-winning broadcaster and morning co-host for WZID’s NH in the Morning on 95.7 FM.  Tracy, the mother of a high school son, a middle school daughter, and stepmother of 9-year-old twins, humorously conveyed the joys and trials of a busy wife, early morning radio co-host, and mother of four.

Ann Lally, President of Salem Co-operative Bank, and Sarah Rastello, Hidden Jewel Committee Chair, presented each winner with a beautiful, cut-glass paperweight depicting the shape and color of their awarded gem.  Donna Morris, Executive Director of the Greater Salem Chamber of Commerce, stated “the Chamber is grateful to the Salem Co-operative Bank not only for their financial support, but for the personal involvement of their employees in making this a wonderful event.”
