Smith Calls Cantor Loss 'Ominous Sign' for Scott Brown

Republicans running for U.S. Senate in NH see different signs in Cantor upset.

Republicans running for U.S. Senate in New Hampshire see different messages in Eric Cantor's surprising primary loss.

Colin Reed, campaign manager for Scott Brown, issued a memo describing the Cantor loss as containing "worrisome lessons" for U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH).

Former Sen. Bob Smith, meanwhile, called Cantor's loss an "ominous sign for Scott Brown and the establishment."

"The loss is a clear indication that when conservatives unite and stick to the principles of the Republican platform, we win. Money doesn’t vote and doesn’t guarantee an election victory," the Smith campaign said in a statement June 11.

"Scott Brown has been in Las Vegas accepting speaking fees at a hedge fund gathering and ducking debates in New Hampshire, Senator Smith has been meeting the voters of New Hampshire and talking about how to take back our country. Last night’s primary election in Virginia, makes one thing clear-when conservatives unite, we win-even when we’re outspent 25-1."

Will Eric Cantor's Loss be Scott Brown's Gain?

The GOP primary for U.S. Senate now features a handful of candidates. The field is: Brown, Jim Rubens, Smith, Karen Testerman and Andy Martin. The state primary is Sept. 9.
