Do NH People Swear More Than Massachusetts Residents?

It may be hard to believe, but a study says it's true.

New Hampshire residents curse like sailors on the phone, according to analysis by the Marchex Institute.

New Hampshire didn't make the list of the top five states that swear the most or the five that swear the least. But the study did place residents in the "Sailors" category along with about a dozen other states, indicating that its residents curse more often than people who live in most other states.

Ohio topped the list for most foul-mouthed callers. Washington residents were least likely to curse on the phone, followed closely by Massachusetts, of all places.

Marchex examined more than 600,000 calls over a year that were placed by consumers to businesses in 30 different industries.

Though New Hampshire people curse a lot, at least they're courteous. The Granite State didn't place in the top five most courteous states, but they do fall into the "Very Courteous" category, meaning they say “please” and “thank you” a lot.

Some other findings from the report:

  • 66% of curses come from men
  • The calls that contain the most cursing are more than 10 minutes long. So the longer someone is on the phone, the more likely that call is to devolve.
  • Calls in the morning are twice as likely to produce cursing as calls in the afternoon or evening.

What do you think about the findings? Do you think New Hampshire residents really curse as much as this study shows? Let us know in the comment section, but keep it clean.
