Man Seriously Hurt In Salem House Fire On Lake Street Wednesday

Firefighters arrived at the home reported fire in the back of the building and a man with severe burns; Derry, Windham firefighters assist.

SALEM, NH — Salem firefighters responded to a reported fire on Lake Street Wednesday after calls from a neighbor reporting a fire.

On arrival at about 11:15 a.m., there was heavy fire in the rear of the building and a man who was suffering from injuries, including burns. The man was treated at the scene and transported to Lawrence General Hospital; then, sources say he was transported to a Boston hospital.

Firefighters initially knocked down the fire quickly. But then, the fire expanded inside the house and required defensive operations as firefighters worked to bring it under control.

Lake Street was closed for an extended time due to the apparatus and hose lines across the road. Derry Fire and Windham Fire assisted at the scene, and other mutual aid departments provided station coverage.

Salem Fire requested that the State Fire Marshal’s Office respond due to the serious injuries. The NH Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the cause and origin in conjunction with Salem Fire.
