Officer-Involved Shooting In Pelham Being Investigated By NH AG

UPDATE: NH AG Identifies man shot by Pelham Police as Sheldon Brockelbank. The man is in stable condition and being treated.

PELHAM, NH – New Hampshire Attorney General John M. Formella announced officials are actively investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred overnight in Pelham.

The incident took place at an apartment complex at 18 Nashua Road after the Pelham Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting an armed man on Friday at about 11:30 p.m.

Sources indicate the original call was for a man who was having a mental health crisis, armed with a gun, with a female in the apartment pleading for the man to put the gun down.

Police arrived to find a man, identified as Sheldon Brockelbank, 33, at that location. During the subsequent encounter, Brockelbank fired a handgun multiple times at officers. Two officers then used deadly force, and one officer used less-than-lethal force.

Police attempted to speak to the man through the window, and the situation escalated. The man was shot by officers, and he was transported by ambulance to Lowell General Hospital with a report of non-fatal gunshot wounds.

He remains hospitalized at this time and is in stable condition. Brockelbank has been charged by the Pelham Police Department for reckless conduct in connection with his firing a firearm that night and will be arraigned at a later date to be determined by the 10th Circuit Court - District Division - Salem.

Saturday morning, NH State Police Major Crime was at the scene of the shooting, gathering evidence, documenting the scene, and speaking to people involved.

Occupants of the large apartment building were able to return to their apartments after the scene was secure.

As part of standard protocol, the officers' identities are being withheld until formal interviews are completed. The Attorney General’s Office emphasized that the investigation into the exact circumstances of the shooting remains ongoing.
