Petitioners at Salem Market Basket Support Arthur T. Demoulas
We caught up with Cassandra Ellard, who was soliciting signatures for a petition on Monday.
On Monday we caught up with Cassandra Ellard, a Haverhill, Mass. resident and employee of the Salem Market Basket on 265 South Broadway.
Ellard, a two-year employee, was in front of the store, asking customers if they wanted to sign a petition supporting company CEO Arthur T. Demoulas.
The battle of the heirs of the Market Basket chain appears to be coming to a head this week as one side of the family battles for control over one of New England’s most successful grocery chains, according to the Lowell Sun.
The board of directors is scheduled to meet on July 18, to vote to oust CEO Arthur T. Demoulas, a son of one of the founders, who has been in control of the company since 2008. The fight is being led by Arthur S. Demoulas, the cousin of the CEO, who is also a son of one of the founders.
Due to the blazing heat, Ellard and other volunteers were taking two-hour shifts to retrieve signatures. A second Market Basket is located less than a mile away on South BroadwayA "Save Market Basket" petition online has already received over 37,000 signatures.
