Salem K9 Units Chase Down Local Man Through Neighborhood

He allegedly tried to steal a car that belonged to his friend's mother.

A local man was tracked down by Salem Police K9 Units on Thursday after he reportedly tried to take a car that belonged to his friend's mother.

William Szafran, 26, of Windham was charged with unauthorized use of motor vehicle, driving after suspension and resisting arrest. He also had an active electronic bench warrant at the time of his arrest.

According to Salem Police, the incident was first reported at 11:30 a.m. Officers responded to a residence on Royal Circle for a report of a stolen car.

While an officer was at the residence speaking with the victim, she told the officer as they were standing on her porch that her car was being driven up the street. She added that she believed the driver to be her son's friend.

Officers returned to their cruisers as the suspect and vehicle took off, and were able to locate the vehicle in a nearby driveway.

Szafran quickly exited the vehicle and began runing through backyards while being told to stop.

The suspect was quickly tracked by K9 Units to the area of Alta Avenue.

He was taken into custody without further incident. Bail was set at $500 cash.
