Salem PD Announces Details Of September's Walk With Us Wednesdays

The program is led by the department's Elder Affairs officer and includes a 2 to 3-mile walk for officers and senior citizens each week.

SALEM, NH —The Salem Police Department announced details about its Walk With Us Wednesdays program for seniors during the month of September.

Each Wednesday during the month, the SPD's Elder Affairs Officer Scott Naismith, and several other members of the department, will be going on walks with local seniors.

The walks, which begin at 9 a.m., will be two or three miles long, according to organizers.

"We look forward to taking a nice stroll, having a chat and enjoying the great outdoors with our community members," the SPD said in a statement.

The SPD added: "This is a great opportunity to meet some Salem police officers while getting some exercise as well."

Here are the details of the September walks:

  • Sept. 7: Meet at the Ingram Senior Center and walk up Veterans Memorial Parkway to Germonty Drive.
  • Sept. 14: Meet at the Tuscan Kitchen lot on Pleasanton Street for a walk up the rail trail.
  • Sept. 21: Meet at the Sleep Number Store parking lot in the new Tuscan Village for a walk around the new complex.
  • Sept. 28: Meet at the rail trail parking lot on the Salem/Windham line for a walk down the rail trail.

Earlier this summer, the SPD announced it was able to obtain a grant for the Elder Affairs officer position and Naismith was appointed to the post. He has been in law enforcement for 19 years, 15 of those in the SPD.

The SPD said Naismith will focus on safety, financial safety and quality of life issues for seniors and their families.

In July, the SPD said Naismith already had assisted numerous community members with finding basic necessities like food, water, housing and running water. He also investigated elder abuse allegations and financial crimes committed against seniors.
