SALEM, NH — Salem Police Department Officer Hanoi Campusano was named the Officer of the Year last week by the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem.

Campusano was one of several members of the community honored at a Thursday breakfast at the Boys & Girls Club's Geremonty Drive headquarters.

Campusano currently serves as the school resource officer at Woodbury Middle School. Colleagues said Campusano's previous experience working at a Boys & Girls Club appears to have prepared him well for his current assignment.

"Officer Campusano has been the school resource officer for the Woodbury Middle School and has absolutely excelled," the Salem PD said in a statement. "Being a former employee of the Boys & Girls Club, he has learned great qualities in being a leader, a mentor, and an all-around nice guy."

The department continued: "These qualities and actions (by Campusano) have made a tremendous impact on the students of Woodbury (School) and the community in general."

Campusano also coaches the Boys & Girls Club high school basketball team in his time off, the department said.

SPD's Lt. Bob Genest said Campusano's affiliation with the department began during his senior year at Merrimack College, when Campusano served as an intern at the Salem PD. Genest said members of the department encouraged Campusano to apply to become an officer.

During Campusano's first year on the job, he saw there was an opening at Woodbury Middle School.

"He stepped up and took on the position," Genest said. "Because of his outgoing and approachable personality, he has become a valuable asset to our community's students and families."
