Salem Police Log: Toddler Drowning, Wires Down
A drowning incident of a 14-month-old toddler and a truck taking down power lines were among items reported by Salem police Aug. 1-Aug. 11.

SALEM, NH — A drowning incident involving a 14-month-old toddler on Aug. 11 is among incidents reported by the Salem police during the first part of August. A dump truck also took down multiple power lines on Aug. 9, causing a utility company to respond. Multiple arrests were also reported, including on charges of organized retail theft and stalking. The following items have been selected from the Salem police log for the time period of Aug. 1 to Aug. 11.
Thursday, Aug. 1
Zachary E. Yawn, 19, of North Miami, Florida, is charged with forgery and theft by deception.
Multiple people are injured in an accident involving a school bus and a dump truck on North Broadway Street near Lake Street, shortly after 10 a.m. Also, a woman reports having about $10,000 stolen from her vehicle on Theresa Avenue.

Friday, Aug. 2
Carole L. Wing, 40, of Salem, is charged with breach of bail and driving after revocation or suspension. Angela Michelle Schwartz, 34, of Northwood, is charged with drug possession. Derry residents Martin Peter Cox, 45, and Lisa M. Cox, 48, are charged with willful concealment at Walmart.
Also, security at Canobie Lake Park declare that the Londonderry missing child is safe and has been found. Officers speak with the child's grandmother. The child is allowed to stay at Canobie and is removed from the National Crime Information Center.

Saturday, Aug. 3
After a disturbance on Lancelot Court just before 2 a.m., Bebelyn Alicea, 47, of Salem, is charged with two counts of domestic simple assault. A 21-year-old man in the incident complains of a head injury, and a 17-year-old reportedly has a cut above her eye. At least one person is taken to Parkland Medical Center in Derry.
Police arrest 39-year-old Raymond Ortiz of Thetford Center, Vermont, on a bench warrant, after checking on a disabled vehicle pulled over on Interstate 93 South near Pelham Road shortly after 9 p.m.
Sunday, Aug. 4
Kevin F. Melvin, 61, of Lawrence, Massachusetts, is charged with nine counts of violating a protective order. He is arrested after a Mason Drive resident saw him remotely through a home video surveillance system and notified the police. A previously issued court order prohibited Melvin from going to the home. Police conduct a search involving a police dog and find him at Granfannallys Pizza Pub.
A driver of a Toyota Camry goes to Lawrence, Massachusetts, General Hospital after a two-vehicle crash near Tuscan Kitchen just after 2 p.m. The accident involves a utility pole struck and damaged near Enterprise Bank.
Monday, Aug. 5
Matthew Garrett Shea, 29, of Salem, is charged with two counts of domestic simple assault. Giovanni Ambrose Rivera, 26, of Salem, is charged with false imprisonment and domestic simple assault. Christopher Roberto Gomez-Corrales, 24, of Salem, is charged with driving under the influence (DUI).
Tuesday, Aug. 6
Jeremy S. McNally, 37, of Concord, turns himself in to police on a negligent driving charge. Shawn Patrick Capsalis, 33, of Amesbury, Massachusetts, is charged with bail jumping and is arrested on a bench warrant. After a vehicle accident at the intersection of Bluff and North Main streets around 3:54 p.m., 33-year-old Andrew J. Descoteaux of Raymond is charged with driving after revocation or suspension, possession of the drug fentanyl and transporting a drug in a vehicle.
Police also direct traffic at the intersection of Central and South Broadway streets due to a vehicle accident involving possible injuries, reported around 1:16 p.m. Then, shortly after 11 p.m., an elderly woman is on the side of the road in the area of Interstate 93 and Pelham Road after being stopped by drivers because she was reportedly driving on the wrong side of the road. The woman states she missed her exit.
Wednesday, Aug. 7
Richard A. Bianchi, 59, of Methuen, Massachusetts, is charged with DUI and driving without a valid license. He is arrested on Lowell Road after Pelham police reported a vehicle "all over the road," crossing into Salem.
Lawrence, Massachusetts, residents Kevin Trinidad, 36, and Lucas Almonte, 41, were each charged with four counts of willful concealment of items valued at more than $1,500 and four counts of being involved in organized retail crime enterprise. Almonte was arrested after turning himself in to police.
Shortly after 9 p.m., police arrest 29-year-old Justin Gillis after a report that someone accidentally shot a firearm inside of a house on Cluff Commons Road. The bullet reportedly went into the neighbor's house and it's unknown whether any neighbors were injured, the caller says. Gillis is charged with reckless conduct and later released on bail.
Also, a man is taken to Lawrence General Hospital after accidentally shooting himself in the hand on Brian Avenue. Near Westchester and South Broadway streets just after 5 p.m., someone is taken to the hospital after a vehicle accident, and a Nissan is towed. A car strikes a deer in the area of Sally Sweet's Way and Veterans Memorial Highway just before 7 p.m. The vehicle sustains minor damage, and the deer is moved to the side of the road.
A 19-year-old man is found unconscious, yet breathing, after a vehicle accident near Best Buy. He is taken to the hospital and a vehicle is towed.
Thursday, Aug. 8
Danielle Marie Dickstein, 39, of Milford, was arrested on a warrant on charges of disobeying an officer, willful concealment and two counts of reckless conduct. Leilani R. Winters, 27, of Loudon, is charged with possession of the drug fentanyl.
Police notify Comcast about a down wire on Haigh Avenue at 7:30 p.m. And someone reports being scammed through email and losing $1,500.
Friday, Aug. 9
After a search involving a police dog in the area of Braemoor Woods Road, 39-year-old Robert Joseph Demaio of Haverhill, Massachusetts, is arrested on breach of bail and stalking charges. Daniel David Sweet, 53, of Salem, is charged with conduct after an accident. Daniel James Hulsoor, 18, of Billerica, Massachusetts, is charged with DUI after someone reported a young man driving erratically in the area of Main Street and hitting a curb around 6:52 p.m.
A dump truck takes out multiple power lines around 12:40 p.m. on Gibney Circle. Fire officials and Liberty Utilities are called. Fire officials also transport a 78-year-old man to Holy Family Hospital after being found unconscious and not breathing in the area of Cypress Street.
Saturday, Aug. 10
On Captains Road, police help put an end to the shooting of reportedly large fireworks shortly before midnight. No arrests were reported today.
Sunday, Aug. 11
Christopher Jesus Arias, 23, of Lawrence, Massachusetts, is charged with making a false report to law enforcement.
Around 1:38 p.m., someone conducts CPR on a man found unconscious in a van at Red Roof Inn after an overdose. Police counsel those involved, and one man refuses hospital treatment.
In a drowning incident on Brookdale Road, a 14-month-old toddler is not breathing when taken out of the pool around 5:21 p.m. The toddler is taken to Holy Family Hospital.
A group of kids leaves Sears as an alarm rings and damage to property is discovered, including damage to a fire extinguisher. On Interstate 93, a man tries to take control of a vehicle and reportedly assaults a family member. A caller states that the vehicle, a Ford F-150, was last seen in the center median between the south and north lanes of the highway. A search involving a police dog ensues, and officers are led to the area of Super Petroleum.
