Salem's Supervisors Of The Checklist Will Be In Session On Sept. 3

Residents can register to vote in the primary, but registered voters will not be allowed to change their party affiliation at the session.

SALEM, NH —The Supervisors of the Checklist of Salem have announced they will be in session on Sept. 3 in order to register new voters for the upcoming state primary.

The session will take place from 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on the lower level of the town's Municipal Office Building.

According to Kelly Anne Dortona, a member of the Supervisors of the Checklist, residents of Salem who will be 18 years of age by Sept. 13 may register to vote at the Sept. 3 session if they have the proper documentation.

Residents also have the opportunity to register with the Salem Town Clerk at any time during regular office hours through Sept. 2, Dortona said.

New Hampshire law also allows a person to register to vote at the polls on Election Day if they present the required documentation: a photo ID and proof of domicile are required, a driver's license is acceptable.

Naturalized citizens must show a passport or documented citizenship papers in order to register to vote, Dortona said.

The Supervisors of the Checklist also reminded residents who are registered with a party that they are not allowed to change their party affiliation at the Sept.3 session. On Election Day, they must take the ballot of the party in which they are registered.

"Undeclared voters may choose a party to vote in and then switch back to an undeclared status after they vote," Dortona said. "Supervisors will be available for this at a table near the exit of the polling place."

Additionally, Dortona said voters must cast their ballots at the polling area where they are listed on the checklist. If an address change is necessary, it should be done before the election at the Municipal Office Building or at the Supervisors of the Checklist session on Sept. 3.

Voters who arrive at the wrong polling location may be asked to go to their original polling place, Dortona said.

Residents who wish to view copies of the current voter checklist can do so at the Kelley Library reference desk or at the Town Clerk's office, according to Dortona.
